Icebird spiral [A3 size art print]

Shells, storms and galaxies often take the form of an equiangular, or logarithmic, spiral. So does Romanesque broccoli, but I hate broccoli. This is a set of 11 spirals, each with the same origin but successively rotated by 20 degrees.

It's easy to describe this kind of spiral mathematically, not so easy in words. Perhaps the simplest way to say it is that if you were to draw a whole lot of straight lines radiating our from the origin, wherever the spiral crossed one of those lines it would be at the same angle to the line - strictly, it's tangent would be at the same angle - hence 'equiangular'. The spiral has many fascinating qualities - so many that the famous mathematician Jacob Bernoulli nicknamed it 'miraculous spiral'. Among them is the fact that no matter how many turns you add, the overall shape never alters - just turn and shrink and you're back where you started. Then there is the fact that you can add an infinite number of turns going inwards but the distance from any point along the spiral to the origin is finite!

And just because it is so orderly in its growth, if you rotate a copy around the origin it will always fit without becoming tangled. This one I call 'The Firebird Spiral'.

Designed by David Lawrence, d/dx art prints are created on 315 gsm Canson Infinity Museum Rag produced at the centuries-old Arches paper mill in France. This superb art paper is acid-free and uses no optical brighteners to degrade over time. Ultrachrome K3 inks provide vivid colours which will last without fading for many decades in normal conditions. The robustness of the paper makes DIY framing a simple matter.

This print is standard European A3 (297 * 420 mm) in size and is unframed. It will be packed flat in a crystal envelope with cardboard stiffener and posted in a rigid protective container.

The colours you are seeing on your monitor are inevitably not precisely the colours you would see if you were looking at the same design in printed form. There is simply no way around that, since the internet places limits on the range of colours that can be displayed and, even if that were not the case, every monitor is subtly (sometimes wildly!) different in the way it displays colours.

But you can be reassured that the quality of our equipment is such that colours and quality are consistent over time and the print you receive will be identical to other prints sold in galleries and art fairs to buyers who have every opportunity to handle and assess them.
