Only the good die young [A4 size art print]

A friend revealed that she had great difficulty in sorting out in her head the exact meaning of the old phrase ‘only the good die young’. Did all the good die young? Was everyone who died young good?

This design is a little bit of fun but it also has serious purpose. It shows that the use of simple diagrams can help to clarify an idea that words have confused. They could be described as Venn diagrams except that they are so simple that they make no real use of the special qualities of John Venn’s invention, which dates from the 1880s.

It also serves to illustrate the way the vital word ‘if’ is used in mathematical thinking. ‘If is known as a connective – that is, it connects two ideas together and it is incredibly important in mathematics and in logical statements generally, not least because if means that you can often identify something quite complicated by a simply feature it displays. Take the statement ‘if A then B’, it doesn’t much matter what A and B are, they might be objects, actions, a mixture of the two or any number of weird and wonderful things. All that matters for the statement to be true is if you find that A is true, then you will always find that B is true.

A proper explanation requires a longer text and a helpful illustration, which the restricted facilities here on Etsy don't provide for. So to find out more, pop along to http://ddxart.co.uk/only-the-good-die-young/.

Designed by David Lawrence, d/dx art prints are created on 315 gsm Canson Infinity Museum Rag produced at the centuries-old Arches paper mill in France. This superb art paper is acid-free and uses no optical brighteners to degrade over time. Ultrachrome K3 inks provide vivid colours which will last without fading for many decades in normal conditions. The robustness of the paper makes DIY framing a simple matter.

This print is standard European A4 (210*297mm) in size and is unframed - (An A3 version is available as a separate listing.) It will be packed flat in a crystal envelope with cardboard stiffener and posted in a rigid protective container.

Additional

The colours you are seeing on your monitor are inevitably not precisely the colours you would see if you were looking at the same design in printed form. There is simply no way around that, since the internet places limits on the range of colours that can be displayed and, even if that were not the case, every monitor is subtly (sometimes wildly!) different in the way it displays colours.

But you can be reassured that the quality of our equipment is such that colours and quality are consistent over time and the print you receive will be identical to other prints sold in galleries and art fairs to buyers who have every opportunity to handle and assess them.
